- It is actually not microsurgery as we do not use microscopes. It is more appropriately called keyhole surgery.
- It is no more expensive compared to open surgery as reduced hospital stay, early mobilization, less medications and early return to work make up for instrument costs.
- Sometimes, even in best hands operation cannot be done laparoscopically and needs open surgery like conventional means.
- All operations cannot be done laparoscopically. It can only be done in abdominal organ surgery. Operations in the chest are called thoracoscopic and are similar to laparoscopic operations. Hydrocele, piles etc cannot be done by the laparoscope.
- Some of the cases have been done as day care but most of laparoscopic operations are done with a short hospital stay of 1-3 days.
